How Safety at an Outdoor Festival Is "Planned"

A smooth outdoor festival rests on a great deal of invisible safety planning. We share the way we think about it.

Behind every outdoor festival that looks effortless and joyful, there is a thick safety plan.

For LOOK Live, safety is never a review item after the show — it is the first-principles question at the planning stage.

Start with the flow

How the audience enters, how they move between stages, how they leave in an orderly way at the end — these flows determine crowd density and risk points. We run through them repeatedly during site planning, designing potential congestion out of the picture in advance.

Anticipate the unexpected

  • Weather — heat, rain and wind each need their own plan and supplies;
  • Medical — first-aid locations, emergency lanes and response procedures must be set early;
  • Contingency — clear coordination with the venue, security and local authorities.

A sense of safety is part of the experience

In a well-managed event, the audience may not be able to name what was done well — but they feel at ease. That ease is exactly what we hope every show can deliver.
